Joan Leung, MD
Consider this hypothetical
scholar who has recently completed a clinical fellowship in Oncology.
During that fellowship, she also completed basic coursework on
research design and biostatistics during. She is interested in
determining risk factors for breast cancer, pursuing the hypothesis
that estrogen receptor + (ER+) and ER - cancers have different
risk factors.

Research
Area: |
Breast Cancer
|
|
Overall goals:
|
- Develop indices
of risk of ER+ and ER- breast cancer based on risk factors
and direct measurements (mammograms, genotypes, serum
estrogen metabolites, cytology and chemical markers in
nipple aspirates).
- Start a prospective
study of a large cohort of women to test the value of
these new measurements for prediction of ER+ and ER- breast
cancer.
|
|
Specific goals
for training:
|
- Molecular
genetics of cancer
- Interpretation
of mammograms
- Nipple fluid
aspiration
- Statistical
methods for repeated measurements and survival data
- Programming
in SAS
- Improved
oral presentation skills
|
|
Specific goals
for mentored research:
|
- Published
systematic review of risk factors for breast cancer including
meta-analysis of the association between estrogen metabolites
and risk of ER+ and ER- breast cancer.
- Abstract
and paper (using the SOF data base and serum specimens)
describing the relationship between estrogen metabolites
and risk of ER+ and ER- breast cancer.
- Proposal
to the Dept. of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program
to analyze the relationship between an innovative new
measurement of mammographic breast density and risk of
breast cancer in the San Francisco Mammography Registry.
- RO-1 proposal
to NIH to obtain blood and risk factor information on
women who undergo mammography in the Northern California
Kaiser System, in collaboration with Dr. Laurel Habel
(resource faculty at Kaiser DOR).
