License Agreements
We ensure that all software installed on our network is covered by a valid software license agreement. Software companies and major software organizations such as the Business Software Alliance and the Software Publishers Association (the primary license enforcement agencies) have been known to conduct random audits. Fines for non-compliance can be as high as $100,000 or more per infringement. We use UCOP system-wide software licenses whenever possible, and obtain directly from vendors licenses for software not supported by UCOP.
User-Owned Software
Network computers — If you need to run your own software on a network computer, contact the Helpdesk to have it installed. For our protection, we will need to keep the license and the disks/CD-ROM for the duration of time that the software resides on our network. Your property will be stored in a locked, fire-proof cabinet.
Open computers — There are no standards or restrictions for computers not directly connected to the network (e.g., home computers and laptops). Users are able to install their own software and have sole responsibility for maintaining valid software license agreements. The university offers licensed research software to campus users through OAAIS Customer Support Service.
