Dr. Martin received his undergraduate degree from the Johns Hopkins University, his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and his Master's degree in public health (Epidemiology) from the University of California, Berkeley. He served as Intern, Resident and Chief Resident in the Department of Medicine and Fellow in the Division of Infectious Diseases in the laboratory of Dr. Julie Gerberding, all at UCSF, prior to joining the faculty of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
Principal Research Interests
His principal interest is in infectious diseases clinical research, with a particular focus on the epidemiology of human herpesvirus 8 (Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus), the treatment of Kaposi's sarcoma, determinants of disease progression in HIV disease, complications of HIV infection, and the provision of antiretroviral therapy in resource-limited settings. He has a variety of projects in both the U.S. and Africa.
