Dr. Martin received his undergraduate degree from the Johns Hopkins University, his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and his Master's degree in public health (Epidemiology) from the University of California, Berkeley. He served as Intern, Resident and Chief Resident in the Department of Medicine and Fellow in the Division of Infectious Diseases, all at UCSF, prior to joining the faculty of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
Principal Research Interests
His principal interest is in the epidemiology of human herpesvirus 8 (Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus) and its relationship to Kaposi's sarcoma, with projects both in the U.S. and in Africa. He is also actively investigating several HIV-related questions including the determinants of disease progression, the long-term consequences of treatment with highly active antiretroviral medications among HIV-infected individuals, and the feasibility of providing post-exposure prophylaxis for sexual and recreational drug use exposure to HIV.
