Dr. Dejana Braithwaite began her research in cancer epidemiology and cancer control at the University of Cambridge Institute of Public Health, where she received her PhD in 2004 supported by a Population Science Fellowship from Cancer Research U.K. (United Kingdom). While at Cambridge, she led investigations focused on public health genetics. In 2004, Dr. Braithwaite served on the technical expert panel for a report commissioned by the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ Publication No. 08-E001: “Collection and Use of Cancer Family History in Primary Care”).
After relocating to UCSF in 2004, Dr. Braithwaite completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer epidemiology at the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. As part of her postdoctoral research, Dr. Braithwaite was the lead author on a publication in the International Journal of Cancer, which was the first to link hypertension with an increased likelihood of early breast cancer recurrence and mortality among African American women. In 2007, she was awarded a two-year Cancer Prevention Fellowship from the American Society of Preventive Oncology and the Prevent Cancer Foundation to examine early life socio-environmental exposures in relation to breast cancer risk. In 2008, Dr. Braithwaite received developmental awards from the UCSF Breast Cancer SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) and the Hellman Family Foundation for Early Career Faculty to examine the impact of comorbidity on the course of breast cancer and outcomes in diverse patient populations. Dr. Braithwaite also teaches and mentors students and fellows in epidemiologic and clinical research.
