Dr. Schwartz received her Master of Public Health at the Columbia University School of Public Health and her doctorate in epidemiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. Her research focuses on the epidemiology and etiology of fractures, osteoporosis and falls in older adults with diabetes. She is currently the PI of ACCORD BONE, an ancillary study to the ACCORD trial in older adults with type 2 diabetes, that is examining the effects of intensive glycemic control on skeletal health. Dr. Schwartz is pursuing investigations into the reasons for reduced bone strength in type 2 diabetes include the accumulation of advanced glycation endproducts in bone collagen and changes in bone marrow adiposity. Her current interests include the effects of the thiazolidinediones, oral agents for treatment of diabetes, on bone loss and fracture risk. Dr. Schwartz serves as the Director of the SF Coordinating Center DXA Quality Assurance Group.
