Translating Evidence Into Practice:
System-Centered Implementation Strategies
EPI 247 Spring 2009 (1.5 units)
Course Director: Laura Schmidt, PhD, MSW, MPH
Associate Professor, Institute for Health Policy
Studies
| OBJECTIVES |
 |
This course surveys a range of translational tools at the
heath care system level that can be used to promote the adoption of evidence-based
medicine by providers and delivery systems. Strategies for change are
presented in the broader context of sociological theories of organizational
behavior and policy implementation. The focus of this course is on translational
tools that can be used by stakeholders outside health care organizations
including purchasers, payers and government regulators to
promote the adoption of clinical innovations within organizations.
Such tools range from contract-based payment incentives, to performance
monitoring, education and technical assistance programs, to changes in
existing government licensing laws and quasi-governmental regulations
used by credentialing agencies. The course is team-taught by an organizational
sociologist and physician-policy researcher from UCSFs Philip R.
Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, augmented by faculty guest speakers
who do translational research on specific topics relevant to the course.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Better understand the nature and scope of system-level tools for promoting
the widespread adoption of new clinical and public health interventions;
2. Consider how each tool can be applied to address barriers to translation
in the student's substantive field of expertise;
3. Develop grantsmanship skills, including how to develop new proposal
ideas, how to "pitch" proposals to potential funders and write
a fundable letter of intent; and
4. Complete a fundable brief proposal for a pilot study that applies a
selected translational tool to the student's area of expertise.
