Translating Evidence Into Practice:
Individual-Centered Implementation Strategies
EPI 246 Fall 2011 (2 units)
This course will focus on developing interventions for individual health behavior change and will include behavior change strategies at the individual, interpersonal, and system/community level. Goals are to enable students to develop practical frameworks to integrate principles of behavior change theory, evidence for effective tools, and practical implementation strategies into the design of health interventions. At the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Incorporate behavior change theories into a theoretical
framework that applies to their area of interest;
Designing Clinical Research (Epi 202) and Translating Evidence Into Practice: Theory and Design (Epi 245). Exceptions to this prerequisite may be made with the consent of the Course Director, space permitting.
Lectures with discussion: Thursdays, 10:30 AM-12:00 PM, September 22 to December 8 Health Behavior and Health Education: Theory, Research, and Practice by Karen Glanz. Jossey-Bass. 4th edition. 2008. A shorter version can be downloaded from the web: Theory at a Glance: A Guide for Health Promotion Practice. US Dept Health and Human Services, NIH, 2005. Grades will be based on successful completion of weekly homework assignments (70%), and final protocol presentation (30%).
This course is open to a limited number of individuals outside of the ATCR and Master's programs. Preference is given to UCSF-affiliated personnel. We regret that auditing is not permitted.
