Translating Practice Into Evidence:
Community Engaged Research
EPI 248 Spring 2012 (1 unit)



OBJECTIVES

This course will teach the principles and applied methods of community engaged research, including defining the community and partnership models for identifying relevant research questions, developing and implementing study designs, interpreting and disseminating findings, and scaling-up studies for translational implementation research. Partnership models will include working with community clinicians, community-based organizations, and health systems and public health agencies.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

1. Define the key principles of community-engaged research;
2. Describe the benefits of community-engaged research for the scientific validity, impact, and ethical conduct of research;
3. Identify challenges to community engagement in research and strategies to overcome these challenges; and
4. Apply the principles and methods of community-engaged research to the student’s own research program and integrate the methods in a practical manner into the protocol for a specific research project.

PREREQUISITES

Designing Clinical Research (Epi 202). Exceptions to this prerequisite may be made with the consent of the Course Director, space permitting.

FORMAT AND GRADING

Each session will consist of 90 minutes of didactic material, panels, and group discussion. Evaluation of student performance will be based on successful completion of weekly homework assignments, class participation, and attendance. Each student will be expected to work on a project and apply the course material to the development of that project over the session.

ENROLLMENT

This course is open to a limited number of individuals outside of the ATCR and Master's programs. Preference is given to UCSF-affiliated personnel. We regret that auditing is not permitted.
