Translating Evidence Into Policy:
Framing Research to Influence Policy

| OBJECTIVES |

This course will focus on the policy process and strategies for collecting and disseminating research findings to inform and influence that process. The course will be taught through a series of lectures. Lectures will be delivered by faculty with extensive experience at the federal, state, and local level in health care policy who will use examples from their own work as the basis of teaching generalizable strategies to trainees at all levels of research sophistication.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Recognize how research is used in the policy process;
2. Identify opportunities to use natural experiments to study the impact of policies;
3. Develop strategies for disseminating research through the media to influence the policy process;
4. Understand effective communication strategies with policymakers to influence decision making;
5. Create a robust dissemination strategy that can increase the potential for research to be impactful in the policy arena; and
6. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of participatory research with policymakers.

| FORMAT AND GRADING |

Each session will include approximately 60 minutes of didactic material and 30 minutes of homework review. Evaluation of student performance will be based on successful completion of weekly homework assignments, class participation, and attendance.

This course is open to a limited number of individuals outside
of the ATCR and Master's programs. Preference is given to UCSF-affiliated personnel.
