FORMAT

Lectures and small group sections. Small groups will provide an overview of lecture material, discussion of reading, and review of assignments.

OPTIONAL TEXTBOOK

Systematic Reviews in Health Care: Meta-analysis in Context edited by Matthias Egger, George Davey Smith, Douglas G. Altman. BMJ Books. 2001. (This is an excellent text, and we highly recommend it for students who are planning to do a systematic review in the future.)

Books may be purchased either through the publisher or a variety of commercial venues (e.g., Amazon.com).

HOMEWORK

Homework must be turned in by 1:00 pm on the day it is due. No late homework will be accepted. If you are unable to attend the class, please e-mail your homework to the TA prior to class. Homework will be reviewed during Sections. If you would like to take notes directly on your own homework, bring 2 copies of your homework to each Section: one copy to turn in at the beginning of the section for grading, the second copy to use for taking notes.

FINAL EXAM

There will be a take home final exam. The exam will be distributed during class on April 26, 2012, and will be due to Susie Kussmaul (kussmauls@peds.ucsf.edu), course TA, by 5:00 PM on May 10, 2012.

GRADING

Grades will be based on total points achieved on homework (60%) and the final exam (40%). Late assignments are generally not accepted. If you know you will be absent from a small group section, please obtain prior approval from your section leader and e-mail homework to the TA (see above). Unexcused absences will result in a lower grade for section participation.
