Molecular and Genetic Epidemiology II
EPI 219 Spring 2008 (1.5 units)

OBJECTIVES

This course will discuss selected statistical topics in genetic and molecular epidemiology. We focus on statistical concepts, and specialized statistical procedures commonly used in genetics. We will cover basic concepts (permutation tests, likelihood ratios, multiple comparisons), study designs (use of model organisms, admixture mapping, family-based and population based association studies), as well as special topics of current interest (dog genetics, genomewide association studies).

Students will be able to appreciate the statistical principles underlying genetic analysis. They will be able to anticipate practical issues in study design, and data analysis. They will be exposed to real data, and current statistical issues facing the genetics community.

Students are encouraged to utilize their own projects to motivate discussion, and to suggest additional topics of interest.

PREREQUISITES

Designing Clinical Research (Epi 202) and Molecular and Genetic Epidemiology I (Epi 217). Exceptions to these prerequisites may be made with the consent of the Course Director, space permitting.

FORMAT

The class meets on Tuesdays from 8:45 AM-10:15 AM at China Basin Landing, Room 5721. The first session is on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, and the last session is on Tuesday, June 3, 2008.

Lectures: The first 9 sessions will be devoted to lectures. Students should complete the assigned readings before class.

Term paper and student presentations: Students are expected to write a brief term paper (less than 4 pages) that is due by the 9th lecture period (May 27). The papers will be circulated among the students, and the 10th and 11th periods (May 29 and June 3) will be devoted to brief presentations by the students, and class discussion. Students should initiate a discussion about term paper topics by the 4th period (April 22). Possibilities include critically reviewing a recent paper, drafting a future research proposal outline, or presenting the data analysis of a study. Students should finalize the paper topic by the 7th period (May 13).

OPTIONAL TEXTBOOK

A Primer of Genome Science by G. Gibson and S. Muse. Sinauer. 2nd Editon. 2004.

This book is a broad survey of the ideas and technologies underlying genetics and genomics. While not essential to the course, students may find relevant background information, and useful pointers for further study.

GRADING

Grades will be based on class participation, term paper, and presentation.
