Molecular and Genetic Epidemiology I
EPI 217 Winter 2012 (2 units)



OBJECTIVES

This course introduces the concepts, principles, and use of molecular and genetic methods in epidemiologic and clinical research. Specifically, students will learn about: common molecular and genetic measures; linkage and association approaches to searching for disease-causing genes, and their interaction with environmental factors; pharmacogenomics; and ethics in genetics. Ultimately, students will develop a framework for interpreting, assessing, and incorporating molecular and genetic measures in their area of research.

PREREQUISITES

Designing Clinical Research (Epi 202). Exceptions to this prerequisite may be made with the consent of the Course Director, space permitting.

READINGS

Required readings provide important background information, and should be completed before the start of the corresponding lecture.

TEXTBOOK

The Fundamentals of Modern Statistical Genetics by Nan M. Laird and Christoph Lange. Springer. 2010.

Textbooks may be purchased from the UCSF online bookstore (as well as Amazon and other vendors).

GRADING

Grades will reflect scores on:
1. homeworks (60% total);
2. class participation (10%); and
3. the final project (30%).
Homework should be turned in on the due date by noon (Mondays).

This course is open to a limited number of individuals outside of the ATCR and Master's programs. Preference is given to UCSF-affiliated personnel. We regret that auditing is not permitted.
