| OBJECTIVES |

This course will provide an overview of issues and methods for the study of the epidemiology of aging with a focus on common chronic diseases in older populations. Students will learn how epidemiologic methods can be applied to aging populations with emphasis on translational applications.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Identify major risk factors for the epidemiology of major chronic diseases in older populations;
2. Apply epidemiologic and statistical methods to analyis of problems specific to aging populations, especially in a longitudinal context; and
3. Understand theories of biological and social processes that underlie development of chronic diseases in aging populations and apply them to epidemiologic research.

Requirements:
- Class attendance (20%)
- Paper (40%): 25 pages maximum: options: (1) completed research paper with data analysis of existing dataset in older populations (can be your own work). Or (2) systematic review or meta analysis of a focused area in aging epidemiology with implications for translation to community or clinical settings or (3) another topic approved by the instructor. DUE dates: TOPIC on 2/15: Paper on 3/14/12
- Presentation: (40%). Students will make a 15 minute formal (organized, with slides) presentation of some aspect of their paper in class.
