Health Disparities

| OBJECTIVES |
 |
For investigators planning to conduct clinical or population
research in health disparities by race/ethnicity or in ethnically diverse
populations, this course provides an introduction to fundamental methodological
considerations in conducting this research. The course will address:
- The meaning of race, ethnicity, social class and culture, and how
these constructs affect health, health outcomes, and clinical research
in addressing health disparities.
- Multi-level factors that are key mechanisms by which health and
health care disparities occur.
- An overview of measurement issues in primary data collection
and methods for evaluating and selecting self-report health measures
for use with diverse ethnic groups.
- Selected quantitative techniques that examine mediating and moderating
variables in determining health outcomes in diverse populations.
- How to use qualitative methods in developing and pre-testing
quantitative survey instruments.
- Strategies for recruiting ethnically diverse populations and
for expanding the roles of communities in the research process.

Designing Clinical
Research (Epi 202). Exceptions to this prerequisite may be made
with the consent of the Course Director, space permitting.

- Lectures, interactive discussion, and in-class exercises.
- No textbook; a reader will be available.
| GRADING |

Grades will be based on completion and review of 6 assignments.

This course is open to a limited number of individuals outside
of the ATCR and Master's programs. Preference is given to UCSF-affiliated personnel.
