Health and Retirement Study (HRS)

The University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study (HRS) surveys more than 22,000 Americans over the age of 50 every two years. Supported by the National Institute on Aging, the study paints an emerging portrait of an aging America's physical and mental health, insurance coverage, financial status, family support systems, labor market status, and retirement planning.

Years Available: 1992-2004

Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria: Household residents with date of birth before 1947

Methods: Interview

Sampling Design: Derived from four baseline groups: those born 1931 through 1941, those born in 1923 or earlier, those born in 1942 through 1947, and those born in 1924 through 1930.

Sample Size: Approximately 21,000 respondent in 7,100 households.

Unit of Observation: Households or individuals
