The Population Sciences Division of the Comprehensive Cancer Center (Dr Hiatt, Director) comprises over 60 faculty members whose research spans a broad range of topics on the causes of new cancers and the sickness and death due to the disease. The goal is to develop ways to improve the prevention and early detection of cancer as well as the quality of life following diagnosis and treatment for all of Northern California's diverse populations.

The Cancer Center Society, Diversity and Disparities Program (Dr Green, Co-Leader) studies behavioral aspects of cancer prevention and treatment.

The Cancer Center Cancer Genetics Program (Dr Witte, Co-Leader) is dedicated to the elucidation of the genetics of tumor susceptibility, tumorigenesis, and progression, and to the utilization of this information clinically to improve cancer management. The program encourages the application of advanced genomic and genetic analysis tools to identification of abnormalities that contribute to cancer genesis and progression in humans and in animal models.

The Institute for Human Genetics (Dr Witte, Associate Director) serves as a focal point for campus-wide activities in human genetics and has faculty members spanning three schools; Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy.
