Statistical Assistance for Grant Proposals
Faculty of the Division of Biostatistics are available to provide help with preparation of grants that will be submitted through UCSF, e.g.,
- formulating hypotheses or study aims
- devising appropriate study designs
- defining appropriate outcome, predictor, and confounding variables
- calculation of sample size and power
- planning the data collection and management system
- outlining appropriate data analysis strategies and tests
- writing or editing sections of the proposal
This help is available through CTSI's Biostatistics, Research Ethics, and Design (BREAD) service, which offers statistical assistance for your proposal as well as assistance in non-statistical study design issues. This service is free for brief consultations (of about an hour) or can be hired on a recharge basis for more extensive requests.
If you have any questions, contact CTSI BREAD at 415-502-7893 or email CtsiBread@ucsfmedctr.org.
Statistical Co-Investigators and the
Grant Development Assistance Program (GDAP)
Some research projects will benefit from significant involvement of a statistician, in which case naming a faculty member as a co-investigator may be appropriate. Indeed, many grant applications can be strengthened and their prospects for funding improved by inclusion of a faculty statistician. Our Biostatistics faculty have much experience filling this role and consider it an important part of their mission at UCSF. Such proposals typically require much more effort than can be provided for free through the BREAD service. If an investigator anticipates they will need significant involvement on their research project from a Biostatistics faculty member (generally defined as 10% time commitment or greater), then the first step toward including a statistical co-investigator should usually be seeking help preparing the proposal through our GDAP service, which is free up to 20 hours.
Please request help at least 4 weeks before the proposal is due for review at the UCSF Contracts & Grants office. Otherwise, the time available for these services may already be heavily committed.
Request a GDAP consultation through CTSI's Biostatistics, Research Ethics, and Design (BREAD) service.
