| The main results of the Heart and Estrogen/progestin Replacement Study(HERS) were published in August 1998 (JAMA 1998;280:605-613) , and presented the near-final data that were available at the time, one month after close-out. The final results, now available, do not change the main conclusions. As noted in our recent letters (JAMA 1999;281:March 3 issue), there were 179 women with primary CHD events in the estrogen plus progestin group and 182 in the placebo group (relative hazard 0.99, 95% CI .81 - 1.22), compared to the previously published 172 and 176 (relative hazard 0.99, 95% CI .80 - 1.22). The p-value for the higher incidence of gall bladder disease in the estrogen plus progestin group is now 0.07, rather than 0.05. The revised tables from our JAMA report are presented below. |
